Turkey's Ozmert sets March launch of new bar mill in Algeria

Dienstag, 21 Januar 2020

Sarl Ozmert Algeria, a subsidiary of Turkey's construction firm Ozmert A.S., which was established in 2007 in Oran Algeria, is currently building a new bar rolling mill in the Ain Temouchent region, which is targeted to be launched in March this year, S&P Global Platts learned from Erdal Tunc, board member of OzmertAlgeria Tuesday.

"Our new bar rolling mill will have a capacity of 400,000 mt/year. We are targeting to start production at the mill in March this year, which will be the region's first steel complex," Tunc said.

Ozmert currently has annual meltshop capacity of 150,000 mt but has also started a capacity increase investment that will double the liquid steel capacity of the meltshop. "This investment is also targeted to be completed in April this year," Tunc noted.

OzmertAlgeria will initialy target the Algerian domestic market and eventually will focus on export markets in the coming years. "Demand in the Algerian rebar market is currently slow, but we are expecting a recovery in the market soon," the manager added.

At the moment rebar prices in Algeria are reported from Tosyali, Algeria's largest rebar producer, at DNZ 68500/mt ($572/mt), while wire rod is at DNZ 74500 (taxes included). AQS rebars are reported at DNZ 68500 and rod at DNZ 74500, market sources told Platts.

OzmertAlgeria will be the second steel investment in Algeria by a Turkish firm. Turkey's Tosyali Holding is Algeria's biggest longs producer with a rebar production capacity of 3.2 million mt/year and it is also producing wire rod with a capacity of 600,000 mt/year. Tosyali also launched the world's largest (2.5 million mt/year) DRI plant last year at its Algerian steel works.
