Chinese-produced tubes comprised more than 50% of all tube simports into Brazil in the January-October period, Steel Business Briefing calculates from data compiled by foreign trade ministry MDIC data.

Brazil imported 195,156 tonnes of tubes over the ten months, of which 105,043 t originated in China. In 2009 and 2010, China's share of these tube imports was 24% and 43%, respectively.

"China is attentive to the oil and gas opportunities in Brazil and has been intensifying its shipments to meet this demand," says a local trader.

Last month, 19,177 t of Chinese tubes arrived at Brazilian ports, about 70% of the 27,030 t of tubes received that month. Of this total, 10,174 t were seamless and 16,856 t welded, up over 25% on September's 21,202 t.

Sources believe imports will fall in November and December as orders have already been closed for January 2012 delivery. However, they expect tube imports to remain strong as prices remain "very attractive."
