After 25 years at Hanna Steel Corporation, the first 18 as CFO and the last 7 as Executive Vice President Steel Purchasing, Putman launched Birmingham Futures in 2003. Birmingham Futures seeks to match counterparties who desire to eliminate market risk in domestic steel & scrap prices through the use of Steel Futures and over the counter (OTC) price swaps.

Mark has been working with Steel Business Briefing in their London office since 2003. Initially he was covering price and market developments around the world, but as of October 2004 has been developing and editing their monthly analytical publication, Global Market Outlook (GMO). This reviews recent market activity and forecasts prices for the key steel products by major consuming regions. Mark has a wealth of world and steel business experience which enables him to do this. After graduating with an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University, Mark joined Coutinho, Caro & Co in London as a Graduate Trainee. His 8 years with the company (now Stemcor) included 3 years as a delegate based in Khartoum, Sudan covering East Africa. He then became General Manager for Industrial Steels Ltd, a steel trading company, based in Hong Kong from mid 1988 till end 1992. This was the joint-venture between British Steel and Jardine Matheson and he was responsible for all steel trading activity in the Asia Pacific region. He returned to London in 1993 to set up Industrial Steels (UK) Ltd, a 100% owned British Steel company this time and was responsible for developing their steel trading activities world-wide.
