Course Outline


Class Instructors:

Brad Wolf, Director, Berkeley Research Group

Brad is a Director with the Berkeley Research Group, a consulting firm with offices in Pittsburgh PA. He is a Metallurgical Engineering graduate of Lehigh University with over 35 years of international steel industry experience with steel manufactures, engineering contractors and as a consultant, spanning the production of steel from iron ore mining to finishing. He was directly involved in the technology transfer, engineering and construction of many steel plants in North & South America, the Middle East and India including revamps and green field facilities for Pellet Plants, Coke Ovens, Blast Furnaces, Melt Shops, Continuous Casters, Rolling Mills, Process Lines, Mini Mills and DRI plants. He served as the technical consultant for the federal guaranteed Emergency Steel Loan Board program independently valuing the steel plant collateral assets for several loan applications. He now consults internationally throughout the industry. Recently he has been active in the construction of a new integrated mill in Brazil. He has due diligence experience in exploring synergies and value in restructuring, turnarounds, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions in the industry. He is active in AISI.


Roger Walburn, Manager, Customer & Product Development, NLMK-USA

Roger graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1995, majoring in Materials Science Engineering. In 1999, he was named Senior Product Metallurgist for the entire Titanium Sheet & Strip product division of ATI during its start-up as a product line. In 2004, Roger went to NLMK-Pennsylvania (formerly Duferco Farrell Corporation), leading the processing engineering efforts in their finishing mill. He became Manager of Applications and Routings responsible for developing and maintaining the product routings that ensure all customer products and purchase order requirements are met, and in the most cost effective manner possible. He is the principle lead metallurgist for all technical inquiries for the family of NLMK-USA companies that operate in the USA, which includes NLMK-Pennsylvania, Sharon Coating and NLMK - Indiana. Roger was recently promoted to the newly created position of Manager - Customer & Product Development. In this role, Roger will work closely with customers and inside/outside Sales on new product development, product training, order integrity, and improving commercial services. A primary focus of this new position will be clarifying customer material requirements.


Glenn Kidd, Consultant, Retired- Director Market Research & Strategy, U.S. Steel

Glenn is retired from U.S. Steel where he was the director of market research and strategy. In that capacity he was responsible for all aspects of market analysis and classification. He is a sought after independent consultant on issues relating to market development and potential markets for steel products. During his 36 years in the steel industry he has chaired national and international industry committees studying the steel market and its economic drivers. Glenn holds an AB in Liberal Arts from Drake University, a BS in Industrial Management from Washington University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh where he continued advanced studies in Marketing and Business Strategy. He is a frequent speaker and consultant to industry, government and academic groups on the steel industry.


Peter O’Brien, Purchasing Director, Boral Industries

Peter brings with him over twenty years of global metal industry experience in sales, materials, engineering, manufacturing and sourcing in the corporate business environment. As a senior leader he has transformed sourcing organizations and delivered value by integrating supply chains into the corporate matrix. His most recent assignment was with Alghanim Industries in the Middle East and Asia. At Alghanim, Peter led the global sourcing team as the Director, Purchasing. Peter was also a Sr. leader with BlueScope Steel where his role encompassed the development of sourcing best practices through the evaluation of resources, processes, and the organizational structure. Prior to that, he was the Director of Global Strategic Metals for USG Corporation for 10 years, where he was responsible for re-engineering the global metals supply chain to maximize profitability and efficiency. Peter is currently in a strategic sourcing role with Boral Industries, based in Atlanta, GA. Peter holds a Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.


David Feldstein, Director - Risk Management, Flack Steel

David brings an extensive knowledge of commodity markets along with a history of creative financial structuring to his role as Director, Risk Management.  Prior to joining Flack Steel, he worked as a specialist at the Chicago Stock Exchange and proprietary trader, trading equities, equity options, commodities, futures, options on futures, and currency futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In 2012, he was named director of risk management.  In this role, Feldstein is responsible for helping Flack Steel customers proactively manage market volatility by controlling costs through market hedging strategies.  In addition, he provides timely market information and analysis through his blog, The Good, the Bad & the Feldstein.  Feldstein holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business where he concentrated his studies in analytical finance, econometrics and statistics, and economics.
