Seamless carbon tube prices in the north European market are stable and expected to remain at current levels throughout the third quarter despite sluggish demand, market sources inform Steel Business Briefing.

Prices may go down slightly during the summer lull when mills may reconsider their quotations, as traders aren’t blindly buying but carefully weighing purchasing decisions which are typically small orders, says one German mill. Tube mills will remain busy only if oil prices are high, he adds, quoting a June price of €1,080-1,170/tonne ex-works ($1,556-1,686/t) for S355 seamless.

The situation is stable and there is not much movement demand and price-wise in the northern European market, with June prices for S355 at €1,100/t ($1,562/t) ex-works, a northern European trader comments. Prices for seamless may soften during the summer holiday season, he adds.

“Our pre-material base is 100% scrap, and we find that scrap prices have been surprisingly stable over the past two quarters, taking small fluctuations into account such as the increase at the beginning of June,” a German tube producer comments.

Imports affecting the northern European seamless market are mostly from Belarus, with a few imports from China, sources observe.
