Cuba's Antillana de Acero boosts production

Friday, 23 May 2008

Cuba's state-owned steelmaker Antillana de Acero (Empresa Siderúrgica José Martí) has been quickly ramping up production, as a result of several new construction and infrastructure projects in that country.

Steel Business Briefing understands the growth is due to the opening up of the Cuban market. Official data indicates Antillana has produced 53,884 tonnes of long steel products in the first four months of this year, a 62% increase compared to the same period of 2007.

Additionally, Antillana has recently replaced its electric-arc furnace, largely increasing productivity and slightly boosting installed capacity, which is said to reach around 400,000 t/y, SBB notes.

Billets produced there are re-rolled in the company's rolling mill, which handles rebar, profiles and bars.
