Past event: SBB Summer Football 2009

Steel Business Briefing's fifth annual 5-a-side summer football tournament was held last week in London’s Hyde Park with a record number of 16 teams contesting the UK steel industry’s most coveted football prize.

Regular participants Balli Group, ArcelorMittal, Stemcor, Corus and stockholders JCY took part in the, as ever, keenly contested event. This year was also the first time the tournament enjoyed international representation, with Corus being represented by a team from Port Talbot.

The boys from Wales did well, reaching a hard-fought semi final which they lost 1-0 to newcomers HSBC. The other semi final was played out between JCY and global consultancy firm Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) with SKM triumphing over their opponents 1-0.

The final between HSBC and SKM was too close to call until SKM settled proceedings with a spectacular Ronaldo-esque strike that baffled everybody including the goal scorer, running out as eventual 2-1 winners.

The winner of this year’s “Golden Boot” award for scoring the most goals was Christopher Downie from HSBC. The final was successfully refereed by Hassan Alaghband of Balli Group and the award kindly presented by Svetlana Yakimovica, also from Balli.

The event was a great success, raising a lot of money. It has been given to the Spinal Research and Homeless World Cup charities.

So thank you to everyone for participating, see you next year! Click here to view some photos!
