Though Latin America's steel industry is faring better than many other parts of the world, most local suppliers continue to face highly uncertain times both domestically and in their export markets. Some governments are investing in stimulus measures, boosting infrastructure expenditure, whilst others are holding down their currency to encourage exports or putting restrictions on imports. SBB's Steel Markets Latin America 09 conference in São Paulo will explore these developments, to give participants a firmer grasp of both regional and international economic and steel market trends.

For many, the issue of benchmark versus spot iron ore prices will be the key raw materials' concern. However, others will be more interested in the many proposed steel making projects on the continent, and if they will go ahead. Steel producers are already talking about an end to destocking in the coming months, but few yet dare to discuss any real upturn in orders. Ultimately, the opportunity to network with other producers, distributors and analysts will make SMLA the regional event of the year.
