Demir ve çelik endüstrisi karbon dioksit emisyonu ile ilgili küresel enerjinin en az %5’inden sorumlu bulunuyor. Gelecek yıllar için spesifik emisyon hedefleri belirleyen hükümetler arası görüşmelerin bir sonuca ulaşmadığı gözlense de, hükümetler karbondioksit salınımlarının düşürülmesi için birçok şey yapılması geretiğine dair hemfikirler
